HOCKEY DEFEATS FRAMINGHAM STATE, 6-3

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team got four goals from their top line of junior forwards Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors), Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and went on to defeat visiting Framingham State, 6-3, in a Massachusetts College Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.

After each team scored twice in the first period, the Corsairs scored three times in the second period and took the lead for good. Junior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 3-2, when he scored a power play goal from the right point 35 seconds after the period began. Senior forward Jason Anderson (Arden Hills, MN/Laconia Leafs) tied it for the Rams at 7:04 when he flipped home a rebound. Hill put UMass Dartmouth ahead for good  when he one-timed home a pass from Stahl at 13:25, and sophomore forward Shawn Manning (Stoughton, MA/Salisbury School) gave the Corsairs a two-goal lead when he scored on a rebound at 14:45.

Bartelson scored the only goal of the third period, firing home the rebound of a shot by freshman defenseman Ricky Miller (Colorado Springs, CO/Northern Cyclones) at 2:39. Hill also drew an assist. 

Each team scored twice in the first period. Junior forward John Sheehan (Stoughton, MA/Walpole Express) put the Rams on top when he flipped a rebound past UMass Dartmouth senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) at the 10:28 mark..Stahl tied it at 11:09 when he scored a power play goal, firing home the rebound of Bartelson’s shot  at 11:09.

Senior forward Brett Casavant (Gardner, MA/Gardner HS) put FSC ahead when he converted a pass from senior forward Matt Lally (Natick, MA/Southern Maine) at 12:03. Freshman forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) tied it at 15:39 when he took a pass from freshman forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) in front of the net and fired a shot past FSC senior goaltender Andy Joyce (Milford, MA/Marloro HS) at 15:39. 

“The first period was indicative of the fact that we hadn’t played for a week,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We picked it up in the second period, and we played a tight-checking third period. That’s the second four-goal game in a row for our top line. We’ll get ready for a big day Saturday, when we host first-place Fitchburg State in the final game of the season on Senior Day.”

UMass Dartmouth out shot Framingham State, 48-25. Dryjowicz-Burek made 22 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Joyce made 42 stops for FSC. The Corsairs converted two of eight power play chances, while the Rams failed on all nine of their power play opportunities.

UMD improved to 9-14-1 and 4-12-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while Framingham State dropped to 2-20-2 and 2-15-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Fitchburg State on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. The game was the final contest of the regular season for Framingham State.
