The RPI website today posted an article mourning the death of former RPI
hockey coach Ned Harkness on his 89th birthday in Rochester, NY. Ned, whose
health had been fine until very recently, had suffered a stroke from which
he never recovered,

Harkness was the founder of the modern day RPI hockey program starting in
the late 1940's leading RPI to a national championship in 1954-55. Later in
his career, he moved on to Cornell where he brought the "other" Big Red to
national prominence leading them to a national title in 1967 and 1970. He
was the only coach to ever win national titles at 2 different schools until
Jerry York repeated the feat at Boston College. He was also the only coach
to ever lead a division 1 hockey team to an undefeated season (Cornell 1970
29-0-0).

Just last year, Ned appeared at the RPI Field House to accept induction into
the RPI Ring of Honor, it's highest athletic award. He joined Adam Oates and
Joe Juneau as recipients of this award.

Here is a link to the story in the Troy (NY) Record from earlier today
announcing his deteriorating condition:

There are other stories on the RPI and Cornell athletic websites and no
doubt will be on USCHO and CHN sometime later today
