HOCKEY DEFEATS JOHNSON & WALES, 5-4

NEW BEDFORD, MA-Freshman forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored with 2:58 remaining in the third period to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team a 5-4 win over visiting Johnson & Wales in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Wednesday evening.

Stahl flipped home the rebound of a shot by sophomore defenseman Paul Moran (Rockville Centre, NY/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) after freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) won the face-off in the JWU zone.

The Corsairs had taken the lead, 4-3, when senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) scored a power play goal at 7:41 of the third period. Senior forward Matt McGilvray (Rochester, NH) tied it for the Wildcats when he scored his second goal of the game at the 9:31 mark.

The teams combined for five goals in the second period, which ended in a 3-3 tie. The Corsairs struck first, scoring twice within 22 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) tied the game with a wrist shot high to the glove side of JWU senior goalie Charlie Bacon (Hudson, MA) 19 seconds into the period. Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) put UMass Dartmouth ahead at the 41 second mark when he re-directed home Hill’s pass. Hill also assisted on Dudley’s goal.

The Wildcats scored twice within 56 seconds in the middle of the period to take the lead. Senior forward Ryan Jacobs (Derby, VT) tied the score at 2-2 when he scored at the 10:19 mark. Senior forward Adam Frew (Concord, NH) gave JWU a 3-2 lead when he flipped home the rebound of McGilvray’s shot at 11:15.

The Corsairs tied the game just 22 seconds later. Junior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) fired home a rebound at 11:37 to deadlock the game for the third time.

Despite being penalized five times, Johnson & Wales took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. McGilvray scored a shorthanded goal, firing a wrist shot past UMass Dartmouth junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at the 6:09 mark. Freshman forward Joe Simeone (Cranston, RI) assisted.

“That was a win that we needed,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We stuck together as a group. In close games, it is always the little things that make the difference and that showed the importance of end zone face-offs.”

The Corsairs converted two of eight power plays, while stopping the Wildcats on four of five chances. UMass Dartmouth out shot JWU, 50-35. Green made 31 saves for the Corsairs, while Bacon made 45 stops for the Wildcats.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 14-8-1 and 12-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while Johnson & Wales dropped to 6-17-0 and 5-9-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Nichols in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Saturday night, while the Wildcats will host Wentworth Sunday.
