HOCKEY TEAM DOWNS FITCHBURG STATE, 6-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three goals in the first period and went on to defeat visiting Fitchburg State, 6-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday afternoon.

Freshman forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) got the Corsairs started early, taking a pass from sophomore center Paul Jerusik (Springfield, MA/Lawrence Academy) and firing a shot past FSC goaltender Devan McConnell at the 1:54 mark. Stahl assisted on the first of two goals by sophomore center Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms), a power play goal at the 6:23 mark. Serino’s second goal of the first period at 11:54 made it 3-0. Junior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) and freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) assisted.

Two power play goals in the second period allowed UMass Dartmouth to take a 5-0 lead. Senior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) made it 4-0 at the 5:29 mark, with Hill and senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) assisting, and senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) made it 5-0 at 6:25 with the Corsairs’ third power play goal of the night. Chris Higgs scored a power play goal for the Falcons at 9:24 of the second period, and sophomore forward Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA/Bay State Breakers) finished off the scoring with a goal at the 10:23 mark. Garabedian and Grant drew the assists.

“We needed this bounce-back win,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We got on them early when we clicked on the power play. As much trouble as we had scoring Wednesday night, we were very opportunistic tonight. Hopefully, we can turn the corner and string two or three in a row together. We’re 8-2 in the conference and in a battle for home ice with playoff contenders still to play. It should be an exciting three weeks to the finish.”

The Corsairs converted three of their 10 power play opportunities while stopping FSC on all but one of their 10 chances, as UMass Dartmouth took 24 minutes in penalties compared to 34 for the Falcons. The Corsairs out shot Fitchburg State, 37-20. Junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made 19 saves for the Corsairs. McConnell stopped 16 of 20 shots for FSC, while Robert Vorse, who relieved him, stopped 15 of 17.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-7-1 and 8-2-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while FSC dropped to 9-7-3 and 5-3-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Wednesday, while Fitchburg will visit Assumption Thursday evening.
