HOCKEY TEAM FALLS TO SUFFOLK, 3-1

NEW BEDFORD, MA–Sophomore defenseman Nick Davis (Pittsburgh, PA/Northern Mass.) scored a power play goal with 2:24 remaining in the third period, and visiting Suffolk came from behind to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team, 3-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Wednesday evening.

Davis scored from in front of the net 10 seconds after Corsair sophomore defenseman Paul Moran (Rockville Centre, NY/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) was sent off for slashing. UMass Dartmouth removed junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) for an extra attacker with a minute remaining, but Brian Smusz slid the puck into the empty net 15 seconds later to seal the decision.

Each team scored once in the first period. Senior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead when he deflected home a shot by freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) with the Corsairs on the power play at 16:03 of the first period. Senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA) also assisted. Sophomore forward Mike Mondello (Revere, MA/St. Mary’s) tied it for the Rams 1:46 later, when he re-directed home a pass from freshman forward Jamie Armstrong (Lincoln, CA/Vermont Academy) in front of the net.

The Corsairs out shot the Rams, 16-3, in a scoreless second period.

“We had a number of good chances, and we just couldn’t put the puck in the net,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We held a good team to only 14 shots on goal, but they were opportunistic and their goaltender, Jeff Rose, played well. We just didn’t take advantage of our chances.”

The Corsairs converted one of their four power play opportunities while stopping the Rams on all but the last of their three chances. UMass Dartmouth out shot Suffolk, 32-14. Green made 11 saves for the Corsairs, while Rose stopped 31 shots for the Rams.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 9-7-1 and 7-2-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the defeat, while Suffolk improved to 10-7-0 and 8-0-0 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Fitchburg State in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Saturday, while Southern New Hampshire will visit Stonehill Saturday.
