no. 8 Providence men’s hockey DEFEATS NORTHEASTERN, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The eighth-ranked Providence College men’s hockey team
defeated Northeastern, 4-3, on Saturday, November 9 in HOCKEY EAST action
at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
Northeastern made the most of its first shot on goal as Mike Morris
wristed a shot that slipped through PC freshman netminder Bobby Goepfert’s
pads at 1:29 of the first period.
The offense picked up in the second period as the two teams combined to
score three goals. The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 at the 8:40
mark as Mike Ryan backhanded a high shot over Goepfert during a scrum in
front of the net on a power play. Two minutes later, the Friars took
advantage of a power play to score their first goal of the night. Senior
Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) lifted in a rebound at 10:46 for his first goal of
the season. The Friars evened the game at 2-2 at the 11:15 mark as junior
Jon Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) streaked down the right wing and fired a slap
shot that beat NU goaltender Keni Gibson to the shortside.
The Friars took their first lead of the game at 14:43 of the third period
when junior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) collected a rebound in front of
the net and converted his ninth goal of the season. Junior Cody Loughlean
(Innisfail, Alta.) scored what proved to be the game winner at the 14:43
mark of the third period. While on the power play, freshman James
Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.) fired a slap shot from the point that was
tipped by Loughlean over Gibson’s left shoulder. Ryan scored his second
goal of the night to make the score, 4-3, with 18 seconds remaining, but
the Friars held on for their eighth victory in nine games.
Gibson made 45 saves, while Goepfert stopped 29 shots to earn his fourth
victory of the season.
