Official release from RPI's SID:

MEN'S HOCKEY LOSES ECAC OPENER
Engineers fall to Clarkson, 2-1, before 4,446 fans

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has named Rensselaer Polytechnic Clarkson University, playing without its head coach, scored twice in the first period and killed off six of seven power plays to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) game in front of a season-high 4,446 fans at the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y. The visiting Golden Knights were without their head coach, Mark Morris, who is on administrative leave while the school investigates an incident between the 15th-year head coach and a player. They improve to 1-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the ECAC. RPI falls to 4-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league.

Clarkson, who was led behind the bench by assistant coaches Fred Parker and Jason Lammers, jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior Adam Campana scored on a rebound of his own shot. Knights' goalie Mike Walsh started the scoring play when he made a kick save which was picked up by junior center Jean
Desrochers. Desrochers skated the length of the ice and fed Campana, who eventually tallied his first goal of the season at the 10:00 minute mark. Clarkson doubled their lead just 1:37 later when sophomore defenseman Randy Jones scored a power play goal from the left point. Dave Reid, a senior captain, and Matt Syroczynski, a sophomore, tallied the assists on the goal, Jones's first of the year.

RPI cut the lead in half with a power play goal of their own at the 15:44 mark. Junior Mikael Hammarstrom knocked in a loose puck from just outside the crease for his first collegiate goal. Freshmen Kevin Croxton and Mark Yurkewecz assisted on the goal.

Neither team could beat the others' netminder over the last two
periods. Walsh, a senior, finished with 21 saves while the Engineers' Kevin Kurk, a junior, made 27 saves.

Rensselaer is right back at the Houston Field House on Saturday night to take on another ECAC foe, St. Lawrence, at 7pm. The Golden Knights will close out a five-game season-opening road trip in Schenectady, N.Y., to take on Union on Saturday at 7pm.
