MAINE DEFEATS BU 4-3 TO ADVANCE TO HOCKEY EAST TITLE GAME

BOSTON, Mass.-- Senior Niko Dimitrakos' (Somerville, Mass.) power play goal
6:59 into the third period snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted Maine to a 4-3
victory over Boston University in the second semi-final round of the 2002
Hockey East Championships Friday evening at the Fleet Center. The
third-seeded Black Bears (23-9-7) will square off with top-seeded and
top-ranked New Hampshire (28-6-3) in Saturday's championship game, as the
Wildcats held off fourth-seeded U Mass Lowell in Friday's first semi-final
by a 4-3 margin.

Maine battled back from an early hole, as the second-seeded Terriers
(25-9-3) took an early 2-0 advantage on a pair of goals from junior Brian
Collins (Shrewsbury, Mass.) that came 1:41 apart in the opening stanza. The
Black Bears sliced their deficit to 2-1 after one on sophomore Colin Shields
' (Glasgow, Scotland) 27th goal of the season, and Maine gained their first
lead early in the middle period on goals by Shields and junior Gary
Shaneberger (Sewell, N.J.) that came 1:16 apart. Boston University forged a
3-3 tie after two on senior Chris Dyment's (Reading, Mass.) power play goal
with 2:23 remaining in the period, setting up Dimitrakos' man-advantage
heroics early in the final stanza.

Senior Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alta.), a surprise starter in goal for Maine,
picked up the win for the Black Bears with a 27-save effort, while sophomore
Sean Fields (Edmonton, Alta.) made 25 stops in net for Boston University as
the Terriers outshot Maine by a slim 30-29 margin for the contest.

Saturday's Hockey East Championship game will mark the first post-season
meeting between Maine and New Hampshire since the 1999 NCAA national
championship game played in Anaheim, Calif. and won by the Black Bears in
overtime. The Wildcats are seeking their first league tournament
championship in school history, while Maine is seeking its first
championship crown since 2000.
