Providence hockey DEFEATED AT #5 BOSTON UNIVERSITY, 3-2
The Friars are defeated in first game of 2002 HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinals

BOSTON, MASS. -- The Providence College hockey team was defeated by
#5-ranked Boston University, 3-2, in the first game of the 2002 HOCKEY EAST
Quarterfinals at Walter Brown Arena in Boston, Mass. on Friday, March 8.
The Boston University Terriers scored the game's first goal after a
back-and-forth first period. BU freshman Justin Maiser beat PC goaltender
Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) with a quick wrister at the end of a
feed that started at the blue line with senior defenseman Chris Dyment. The
score could have been 4-0 BU at the end of the first if not for Schaefer,
who made three outstanding saves at the right post, foiling the Terriers'
attack. BU's Sean Fields proved up to the task, stopping a Devin Rask
(Parkside, Sask.) high wrister from the right circle with a quick flick of
his catching glove. Though PC outshot BU in the first period, 11-7, Rask's
wrister was the Friars best shot at solving Fields early. The other factor
in the first period was the penalties, nine called in all, four on
Providence, including two on PC senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.)
for slashing and roughing at 6:44 of the period, and five called on BU.
The Friars took advantage in the second period, scoring twice to take a 2-1
lead into the lockerroom for the second intermission. Rask put PC on the
board first, tying the contest at 1-1 at the 8:43 mark of the period. Rask
scored off of teammate Jon DiSalvatore's (South Windsor, Conn.) rebound
after Fields was left out of position after making the initial save on
DiSalvatore. Rask and DiSalvatore were in the right position at 17:11, as
they each fired shots off Fields' pads but DiSalvatore's rebound when to a
wide open Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.). The sophomore defenseman was all
alone at the right post when the rebound came to him, and his burried the
shot giving the Friars the 2-1 lead.
The Terriers tied the contest at 2-2 at the 10:38 mark of the third period
when David Klema scored on the power-play. The Terriers Ryan Whitney fired
the puck into the Providence zone and when Schaefer skated behind the net to
stop the puck, BU got a lucky bounce as the puck bounced off the board to
Klema, who flipped the puck into the empty Providence goal. BU regained the
lead at 14:32 when Mark Mullen flipped a loose puck over a prove Schaefer to
give the Terriers the 3-2 lead with 5:28 to play in the third period.
Schaefer made 37 saves in the loss while Fields recorded 25 in the victory.
The two teams return to action in the second game of the best two-of-three
game series.
