WALSH RECIPIENT OF SHEAFFER PEN AWARD
Former University of Maine men's ice hockey coach Shawn Walsh, 46, will be
presented posthumously the prestigious Sheaffer Pen Award at the annual New
England Hockey Writers awards banquet on April 10, 2002. He is the 44th
recipient of the award given each year for outstanding lifetime
contributions to New England College hockey.
Walsh coached at the University of Maine for 17 seasons and posted a record
of 399-215-44 before passing away from complications of renal cell carcinoma
on September 24, 2001. Walsh received the Spencer Penrose Trophy in 1994-95
as National Coach of the Year, and led UMaine to National Championships in
1992-93 and 1998-99. He ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Tournament appearances
and fourth all-time in NCAA Tournament victories.
