Report: Longtime Wisconsin hockey coach to resign
http://www.startribune.com/stories/503/1016594.html

Associated Press

MADISON, WIS. -- University of Wisconsin men's hockey coach Jeff Sauer, who led the team to two national titles, will resign at the end of the season, a newspaper reported today.

The Wisconsin State Journal, citing unidentified sources, reported Sauer has been considering retirement for several months and an official announcement could come as early as this week.

Athletic Director Pat Richter declined comment and Sauer did not return a message the newspaper left at his home Monday night.

Sauer, 58, took over the hockey program in 1982 and has since guided the Badgers to two NCAA titles and become the winningest coach in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

His career record, which includes an 11-year stint at Colorado College, is 647-523-55. He ranks fourth all-time among NCAA Division I coaches and second among active coaches in wins.

The Badgers, who have qualified for the NCAA tournament 12 times under Sauer, have won five WCHA playoff crowns and two league regular-season titles during his 20-year tenure.

Sauer, 58, has a multiyear contract that runs through June 30, 2004. The newspaper reports the university will honor the remainder of his contract and Sauer will continue to be involved with the Athletic Department in an administrative capacity.
