I'm surprised that no one from UNH has logged on about this "controversy'.
First, the using the term "tradition" is stretching it a little bit. The
Beanpot hockey tournament is a tradition, its been played for 40+ years.
Throwing the fish on the ice is a tradition in waiting, having only been
around for 7 or 8 years. I kind of like it since its UNH's own little thing,
but it has to go on a fews more years before it is traditional. As for the
actual event, the time between the scoring of the goal and the ensuing face
off I'll bet is no more than 2 minutes. As Mike noted, the custodians are
ready with scrapers and a shovel and since the fish doesn't go that far from
the stands (20' maybe), it really doesn't take that long to clean it up. I
think if fans are concerned about things slowing the pace of the game they
would do better to decry the antics of a guy like UMass' Sal Manganero who
made a spectacle of himself Saturday night in Durham. I hear he was also a
jerk in the Merrimack game as well. I think he's ready for the Hanson Bros.
commercials.
