Summary:

The first period has killed the Dutchmen all season long. But against
Vermont, it was the 2nd and 3rd periods that were a problem. Union
outplayed Vermont in the 1st, but thanks to Christian Soucy the period
ended in a 1-1 tie. Vermont went on to win 5-2.

Union put the pressure on Soucy early. He came up with some big saves
early on. But Vermont scored first, when Leif Selstad beat Mike
Gallant with Scott Whitney in the box. Less than a minute later, with
Union on the power play, Rick Clifford had a wide open net to shoot
at, but shot the puck wide. Greg Eccleston scored on that power play
to tie it for the Dutchmen at 10:28. Also in the period, Tim Cregan
was dumped in the corner of the offensive zone for Union. Like
everyone in the rink, Gallant thought referee John Gallagher was
calling a penalty on Vermont, so he skated to the bench. But play
continued, and Vermont skated out with the puck. Three penalties were
called, 2 on Union.

The Catamounts came out much stronger in the 2nd period. It took them
only 5 seconds to take advantage of a penalty to Bill McKenna.
Gallant was screened on a quick shot off the faceoff. He got a piece
of it with his glove, but the puck still went in to give Vermont a 2-1
lead. It was a very well-played period by both teams, with very few
whistes. Vermont scored twice before Union's Dalton Menhall made it
4-2 at 17:46.

Union was dominated for most of the 3rd period. The only goal of the
period came on a Catamount Power Play, their 3rd PPG of the night, to
give them the 5-2 lead. Vermont outshot the Dutchmen 42-25, including
30-12 in the final 2 periods.

Union is now tied with Dartmouth for 11th (last) place in the ECAC
with 3 points (1-13-1, 2-15-1), following the RPI-Dartmouth tie.
Vermont evened its league record at 7-7-1, and is 13-9-1 overall.
Vermont will travel to Troy to take on RPI tonight, and Union will
battle Dartmouth at home tonight. It will be a battle to stay out of
the ECAC cellar. Game time is 7:00.
