In Cornell's worst performance of the year (and maybe Union's
best ever), the Red fell 7-1 to the Skating Dutchmen this evening.
Cornell goalie Jason Elliott was pulled after giving up two goals on
three shots in the first ten minutes, and replaced with Jean-Marc
Pelletier. Union led 3-0 after one and added another in the second.
Doug Steinstra got the Cornell goal on the power play at 5:10 of the
second, and this seemed to wake the Red up a bit, but about a minute
later, Tony Bergin ran Trevor Koenig (who set the new ECAC record for
consecutive shutout minutes) for the second time in the game and was
sent off for five minutes. Union scored about four minutes into the
power play, and that was pretty much all she wrote. Senior walk-on
Damien Ruck (don't know the spelling because tonight was the first
time I heard his name) got another major in the third, along with a
game misconduct. Cornell took a minor midway thru that major, and
Union scored their last goal on the 5-on-3. BTW, thanks to Jim
Teresco for pointing out the WRUC (Union student radio) broadcast on
the internet, although I can't say I enjoyed listening to it. :-/
With the win, the Dutchmen have now done what no ECAC team did
to Cornell last year: win the season series. The current ECAC
standings can be read from the first two columns of my
race-in-a-nutshell <http://www.cc.utah.edu/~jtw16960/ECAC.nut>:

Clarkson wins a tiebreaker with Cornell, so even if the Red
win their last three games (@RPI, Clarkson, SLU), they now need Brown
or Colgate to at least tie Clarkson in order to win the ECAC.

Hanging on to second place is a very important thing right
now, since it means playing a 7th-10th place team which will have
played an extra preliminary round game, as opposed to a 5th-6th place
team just as rested as you. Also, Union looks likely to finish fifth,
and no one wants to face them in the quarterfinals. Cornell can of
course hang onto second by winning their last three games. If they
tie RPI tomorrow and sweep next weekend, they could end up tied for
second with Vermont. The tiebreakers get pretty complicated, but
Cornell would beat out UVM in this scenario if they beat Clarkson by
four (maybe three) goals.

And finally, the loss to Union doesn't put the Red any closer
to wrapping up a top-four finish and a home playoff spot. Since Union
wins the tie-breaker with Cornell, but Princeton loses, Cornell needs
a combination of wins/ties and Union losses/ties adding to three
points and a combination of wins/ties and Princeton losses/ties adding
to one to clinch. So the Red can do it tomorrow night if they win
and Union ties or they tie and Union loses.
