A few days back some folks were debating the best Hockey player
from Maine. I wasn't sure if you were talking about best Maine born player
who attended UMaine, or the best player from the State of Maine. If it's the
latter I think you have to count Danny Bolduc in the group of best hockey
players ever to come from Maine.
Danny played youth and one or two years of high school in Waterville,
ME, where he was a standout. Most folks tell me Clucky may have scored more
but Danny was an all-around hockey player. During this time Waterville High
was the Maine and New England champs. As a youth he was a member of a national
champion squirt team out of Waterville as well. He left Waterville to play for
Andover Academy in MA, (I think?). After Andover, Danny went to Harvard and
set a number of scoring records.... can anyone from Harvard tell me if any of
these still stand? (I don't know which records he set.) He left Harvard to
play for the US Olympic team and I think skated on the first line. After the
Olympic's he signed and played with Gordy Howe for the WHL Whalers, then for
the NHL Red Wings and finally for the Flames. He also coached in the AHL. In
all he spent 9 years in the pro's. At one point he was the fastest skater in
the NHL and was one of just a handful of US players in the NHL.
If anyone out there remembers Danny as a Harvard player, or at any other
level purhaps you could post your two cents.
At present Danny is the head coach of the Messalonskee High School
Eagles. Messalonskee HS is in Oakland, ME next door to Waterville. I guess you
could say he's returned to his roots. Two of my son's play hockey for Danny and
have learned a great deal about hockey from him. Danny is currently working
hard to raise funds to build an indoor rink and swimming pool at the high
school. Danny is a real great guy, very down to earth. The kids have his
hockey card from when he played for Detroit. Danny also has a book out on his
life as a hockey player.
