I think the point for those who have criticized on the Boston press is just
that... the Boston press. The sports media here, especially print but also
broadcast, is renowned and loathed for their atrociously hyperactive hack
alarmisim/hero worship (and just plain bad reporting and writing) and we just
can't help but roll our eyes when we hear or read about yet another Two Game
Guaranteed Hall of Famer. This 'burg builds athletes up and tears them down
faster than anywhere else, and hopefully Lacher won't believe everything (maybe
anything) he reads in the paper, because inevitably the tone will change. The
cycle is:

1. You come in, you're the Next Bobby Orr, and gee isn't Harry a genius go buy
tickets NOW!
2. You have a few good games, you're in the Hall of Fame.
3. You have a few bad games, you're dogging it (in baseball, you're probably
on drugs...)
4. You say ANYTHING, EVER questioning the infinite wisdom of any Boston sports
reporter, or refuse to be interviewed (Catch 22), and you're a spoiled whiner
who makes 100 times what an honest workingman does to play a game, and you're a
bad lockerroom influence on the next golden boy... (goto 1)

Anyway, I saw Lacher on t.v. in his first game and he was good (though not the
star of the game). His highlights from the Ranger game looked very good. If
you're a Bruin or Laker fan you hope he'll continue to play well, but it really
won't make any difference in the coverage. Eventually he'll let in a bad goal,
and then to the morons in the upper level and the pressbox, he'll just be
another sieve, and where's Gary Cheevers when you need him!
