#1 - Maine received 3X's the coverage for their 1993 title than
Harvard did in 1989. Harvard got one little 45 second piece
showing them with their trophy while Maine got shots of the
team with the trophy, the team returning to Maine and being
greeted at the Bangor Airport, and even the wild celebration
in the hockey rink. It was a week of Maine hockey here in
             Boston.

I have to disagree. Harvard got tons of media coverage when they won the
title in '89. All three local stations provided lengthy segments in their
sports reports and all had crews following the team to St. Paul. It may
have had something to do with the fact that 1989 wasn't a good year for
Boston sports, but the night Harvard won the title, it was the lead news
story on each station. I don't mean the lead sports story, but the lead
story, period. In comparison, Maine's win was the lead sports story on
two of the local outlets, but not all. And none of the stations led their
news with it.

The Boston Globe also had several writers in St. Paul, one of which was
Bob Ryan, who usually NEVER writes about hockey. I remember an excellent
article he wrote about why the hockey Phinal Phour was the best collegiate
tourney around - he talked about players playing for the love of the game
and for their schools, not for television exposure, not for the schools to
cash in, etc.... This coming from a writer who lives and breathes
basketball was quite something. While the Globe did give Maine
considerable press, I don't think it was more than Harvard got.

One thing that Tony was DEFINITELY right about - the Boston papers don't
provide nearly enough coverage of college hockey.
