Bowling Green,OH-The game that citizens of BG had been waiting for all
week finally arrived.Unfortunatel,it wasn't too much of a game. The Msu
players showed up,but might has well not have. They did not play as
Spartan teams usually do,losing 6-2 to the Falcons in front of approx.
4,400 fans.
BG showed early that they would take control of the game by dominating
play for most of the first period.Senior LW Tom Glantz scored his 10th
goal of the season at the 9:44 mark of the period on a shot from the left
of Spartan goalie Mike Buzak.Assists on the goal went to sophomore Dale
Crombeen and senior Kevin Lune. Both teams went 0-1 on the power
play.Buzak made 11 saves and senior Will Clarke made 8.
With Spartan center Steve Suk in the penalty box for tripping Glantz
scored his second goal of the game on a tough angled shot from the bottom
of the right circle at the 1:09 mark.Assists went to senior Brian
Holzinger and sophomore Curtis Fry.
Sophomore defenseman Kelly Perrault would score the eventual game winner
from just inside the blueline at the 7:11 mark with Spartan center
Richard Keyes in the box for holding.Assists went to Crombeen and
Holzinger. The goal prompted MSU coach Ron Mason to call a timeout to
settle his team down. The timeout worked as his crew held the Falcons
scoreless-until Crombeen scored BG's fourth goal with just over 4 minutes
remaining in the second period. The goal came with Spartan Chris Smith in
the box for slashing. The goal was Crombeen's fourth on the season.Assists
went to Fry and Perrault.BG went 3-3 on the power play in the period with
MSU going 0-4.Buzak had 13 saves and Clarke had 9.
Bowling Green would once again score early in the period when Brian
Holzinger scored his 15th goal of the season at 1:47 of the final
stanza.BG junior Mike Hall had been called for holding only :53 seconds
into the period, giving the Spartans a new life with a power play. But
Holzinger destroyed those hopes when he broke away into the MSU zone and
beat Buzak to put the Falcons ahead 5-0.The lone assist on the
shorthanded goal went to Fry.
The Spartans finally got on the board at 2:46 on the same power play
when senior Steve Guolla scored on Clarke off to the right of the
goal.Assists on Guolla's 7th goal of the year went to Smith and junior
Anson Carter.
BG's Mike Hall scored at the 5:04 mark to put the Falcons up 6-1 and to
really put an end to any hopes that MSU had of a comeback.Assists went to
sophomore Mike Johnson and junior Jason Clark. Coach Mason pulled Buzak
and put freshman Chad Alban in .Alban would go on to make 5 saves and
allow no goals.
MSU would score a pointless goal when sophomore Chris Slater scored his
first goal of the season to bring the Spartans within four goals with 9
minutes remaining in the game.Assists went to sophomore Tony Tuzzolino
and sophomore Taylor Clarke.MSU went 1-1 on the power play in the period
and BG went 0-1.Buzak made 1 save and Alban made 5(total of 30 saves in
the game) with BG's Clarke making 7 saves for a game total of 24.
The win put the Falcons ahead of MSU for first place in the CCHA with 18
points.Michigan State is in second with 17 points and Michigan is in
third with 16 points.BG palys a non-conference game Sat. vs.OSU and MSU
plays Western Ontario.Michigan plays a conference game at Western
Michigan. With a win,the Wolverines will tie BG for 18 points but will
get first place recognition as they have beaten BG in their only meeting
this season and have also played one less game than the Falcons.Go
Western!!!!
