With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #1, in which the later rounds
were weighted more than the earlier ones, the overall winner is...

     Nathan Hampton

whose 224 points beat runner-up Nick Markham by 10. Congratulations to
Nathan, and we all hail your excellent prognosticating ability, although
our admiration needs to come with a caveat -- and no, not the usual
complaint about luck. More below -- but, well done, Nathan.

As for the individual conference winners...

The ECACH race ended in a tie between William Sangrey and Andy Weise, with
53 points each. William took the title on the first tiebreaker, as his
predicted score was one point closer than Andy's.

First place in Hockey East somehow went to me, with 34 points.

The CCHA race also went my way, with a total of 63 points. Yes, I checked
the spreadsheet again.

No human could figure out what the heck was going on in the WCHA playoffs,
and in fact none did; the WCHA was won by the CHODR rating, with 34 points.
The closest human prognosticator was Nick Markham, with 30 points.

Jim Dixon's 52 points were good for the top spot in Atlantic Hockey.

From last week's update, Troy D. Mills won the CHA in a tiebreaker with 34
points.

One scoring note: Having had to deal with a tied consolation game last
week for the first time since I started this contest, it makes perfect
sense that another one (the ECACH) ended in a tie this week. The ECACH
elected to hold a shoot-out after the overtime to settle third place, but
since the NCAA ignores shoot-out results, and since St. Lawrence coach Joe
Marsh (whose team won the shoot-out) referred to it as "preposterous" --
not to mention bull-something -- well, that's good enough for me. So,
anyone who picked St. Lawrence or Princeton to win the ECACH consolation
was awarded 2 points.

Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.

Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually -- gag -- 5-0) to
be 4-1, you would get two points; if you picked 1-0, you would get four
points; and if you picked 6-4, you would get five points. Obviously, the
lower the point score the better.

The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.

As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:

For the ECACH, as mentioned, the championship game score was 5-0 (enough
already!).

For the CHA (from last week), the championship game score was 3-2.

The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win. I believe this is the first time this has
happened since I've been doing this contest, but the Higher Seed strategy
would have been a winning one; anyone following it would have picked up a
contest-winning 232 points.
