CORSAIRS WIN AT STONEHILL, 7-1

BRIDGEWATER, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored four times in the first period and defeated Stonehill, 7-1, in their Eastern College Athletic Conference game against host Stonehill at the Bridgewater Ice Arena Wednesday evening.

Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) and sophomore forward Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA/Bay State Breakers) each scored twice for the Corsairs, who also got single goals from sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms), freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors), and senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS).

Junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) earned his second victory in as many starts, turning aside 16 shots in 50 minutes of action before yielding to sophomore Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS), who stopped two shots and did not yield a goal in his collegiate debut.

UMass Dartmouth, which led, 6-1, after the second period, out shot the Skyhawks, 53-19, and killed all eight Stonehill power play chances while converting three of eight opportunities with a man advantage.

“We played a good, solid, 60 minutes of hockey,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was certainly an improvement from the opening game.”

The Corsairs improved to 2-0 both overall and in ECAC Northeast play with the victory, while the Skyhawks fell to 0-2-1 and 0-1 in conference action with the defeat.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday.
