The University of Maine Black Bears survived a physical Providence
Frairs team in the second period and picked up their third win
of the season against one tie at Maine's Alfond Arena Saturday
night.

Both teams jumped out quickly in the first period, staying off
the boards and playing on the open ice. Maine's Mike Latendresse
scored the first two goals of the game in the period. At 2:04
into play Latendresse took a Trevor Roenick pass and poked the
puck by Friar goalie Bob Bell. Latendresse's second goal came
off a Paul Kariya pass. Latendresse swung behind the net to
Bell's left and proceeded to back hand it between Bell and the
right post.

There were no penalties in the period.

The second period saw a much more relaxed and physical Providence
team. Brian Ridolfi put the Friars on the score board when he took
the rebound from a point-blank stop by Black Bear goalie Blair All-
ison and shot it to Allison's right.

At the 15-minute mark Providence attacked the Maine zone with an
onslaught of shots. At the 17:30 mark Maine's Allison took a shot
from his right and kicked it with his left pad to the left, where
another Providence player slapped it back to Allison. Allison
kicked that shot away, too. In the final five minutes of the per-
iod Providence kept play in the Maine zone. The Friars outshot
the Black Bears 12 to 8 in the period.

Kariya put the game winning goal in at the 2:55 mark into the
third period, with the assist going to Dave MacIsaac. Kariya
skated into the Providence zone alone and faded to Bell's right,
where he slid the puck acros the crease and into the right side
of the net.

Providence's T. Dillabough finished the scoring at 19:16.

Maine improves its record to 3-0-1 while Providence drops to
2-3.
