I kept hoping Carol or Erik would post this, but I guess the typing's left ot
me!

Today's (10/4/93) Star-Tribune had an article by John Gilbert: "Fresh Ice, same
old expectations" along with the Gophers' schedule, roster, and a summary of
returnees.

A few excerpts from the article:

The Gophers hockey team opens workouts today for a new season, in a new arena,
with new players and a new outlook, but coach Doug Woog hopes his squad can come
up with the same old finish.

That would be first or second in the WCHA, where the Gophers have finished all
eight seasons under Woog. Things are different this year, mostly because the
Gophers have moved into a glittering new Mariucci Arena.

<stuff deleted, skipping ahead to discussion of the recruiting class:>

The losses of Johnson and Hendrickson , plus departed seniors Tom Newman in
goal, Travis Richards on defense, and John Brill at forward, are offset by a
solid recruiting crop, particularly at forward.

Nick Checco was the state's Mr. Hockey at Bloomington Jefferson and Brent
Godboutwas a standout at Hill-Murray. Dan Hendrickson and John Hillman bypassed
their senior years of high school to play with the St. Paul Vulcans.

On defense, Brian LaFleur was another member of Jefferson's state champs and
Brett Abrahamson played at Tartan.

"If you look at Godbout, Hillman, Checco, and Hendrickson, not one of them
doesn't have toughness, desire and determination," said Woog. "I think a couple
of them will have the chance to play regularly right away.

"LaFleur and Abrahamson aren't real big, but they can add something to our
defense."

Pam's Notes:
(C)=Co-Captains

All in the Family:
Yes, Jim and John Hillman are brothers.
Yes Dan Hendrickson is Darby's brother.
Yes, Dan Woog is Doug's son.
No, Chris and Mike McAlpine are cousins, not brothers.
Brent Godbout's younger brother, Jason, recently became the first recruit to
(verbally) commit for next year.

I thought Erik was going to post this, but since he hasn't: Erik, Paula, and I
went to a St. Paul Vulcans (USHL Junior) game at Mariucci Sunday afternoon. We
noticed in the crowd Gophers' coaches Doug Woog and Mark Mazzoleni and Lake
Superior State Coach Jeff Jackson scouting the Vulcans and the Omaha Lancers
(the defending champs, who won 4-3, in a pretty good game). Of course, Jackson
probably also wanted to check out the new arena before his team plays in it in
the Mariucci Classic!
