A very entertaining/exciting weekend at Yost,
featuring two teams that don't like each other
very much. Something that dates back prior
to my viewing of the series (late-1980s).

On Friday night, BGSU carried a 2-1 lead into
the third period and went into a defensive shell.
UM's Bobby Hayes scored at 11:00 to tie the
game and UM's David Huntzicker got the game
winner shorthanded at 14:31. The fifth BGSU
skater was just coming out of the box from a
four-on-four situation as Huntzicker scored.

On Saturday night, UM led 2-0 after 20 minutes
and 5-2 after 40. BGSU's Dan Price scored on
the first shift of the third period to pull the Falcons
to within 5-3, but UM scored three times in the
next seven minutes to end any thoughts of a
BGSU comeback.

As seems to always be the case in this situation,
BGSU lost all composure near the end of the third
period. Yost was very heated on and off the ice...
I was certainly hurling a verbal assault at the BGSU
coaches and several players...but referee Steve
Piotrowski did a solid job of removing guilty parties
and getting the game completed without too many
ugly incidents.

In defense of the Falcons, this is by no means the
first or last time a team has resorted to such antics
knowing that their season and a few collegiate careers
are ending in a matter of minutes. Likewise, I'm
sure that UM wasn't above goading some of the BGSU
players at that point. When all was settled, a few
players received misconducts and Michigan only lost
one player to a DQ...defenseman Bob Gassoff, who
beat the snot out of BGSU's Dennis Williams.

Back to the actual hockey, BGSU stayed with senior
netminder Mike Savard all weekend, who celebrated
his 25th birthday on Saturday night. On the surface,
giving up nine goals to a UM team that hasn't exactly
been an offensive powerhouse this season looks bad,
but Savard didn't have much support in front of him and
UM easily had 15-20 high quality scoring chances.
It's to Savard's credit that he kept the score in single
digits.

The offensive leaders for UM on the weekend were
Hayes (3-1--4) and Huntzicker (1-3--4). In Saturday's
game, Mike Comrie registered 1-3--4 and Josh Langfeld
added two goals.
