MTU OFF TO FERRIS STATE AND LAKE SUPERIOR STATE
 
This Week: The Michigan Technological University hockey team will play a
pair of non-conference road games against members of the Central Collegiate
Hockey Association this week. Friday (Oct. 21), the Huskies will be in in
Big Rapids, Mich., to tangle with Ferris State University. Opening faceoff
is set for 7 p.m. (EDT) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena (2,641). Saturday (Oct.
22), MTU moves on the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., where it will play defending
national champion Lake Superior State University. A 7 p.m. faceoff is
slated at the James Norris Arena (3,473).
 
The Broadcast: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live on WZRK radio,
93.5 FM. Bob Olson, the dean of broadcasters in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association, is in his 24th season as the voice of the Huskies.
Volunteer assistant coach Darcy Way is back for his fifth year providing
color commentary.
 
The Records: MTU is 1-0-0 on the season and 0-0-0 in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association. Ferris State and Lake Superior State are each playing
their first official games of the season this weekend. Ferris State was
13-22-1 in all games last year and 12-17-1 (7th) in the CCHA, while Lake
Superior State finished 31-10-4 overall and 18-8-4 (3rd) in the CCHA.
 
The Coaches: Bob Mancini (Colorado College, 1982) is in his third year
behind the bench at MTU.  He owns a 31-42-10 record at the school and in
five years as a college head coach sports a 67-74-22 mark.  Bob Daniels
(Michigan State, 1982) begins his third season guiding Ferris State. In two
years as a college head coach, Daniels has a 34-40-5 mark. Jeff Jackson
(Michigan State, 1978) starts his fifth year as the LSSU ice boss. Jackson,
who also doubles as the school's athletic director, has a career mark of
129-32-17 in four  years.
 
The Series: Michigan Tech and Ferris State will meet for the 13th time ever
Friday (Oct. 21) in Big Rapids, Mich. The Huskies hold a 7-4-1 advantage in
the series, which dates back to the 1981-82 season. MTU and Lake Superior
State State tangle for the 44th time in a series that dates back to the
1969-70 campaign. MTU leads the series by a 27-14-2 count.

About The Opponents: Senior captain Tim Christian (21-22--43) leads Ferris
State up front. Other top returning forwards for the Bulldogs include
junior Val Passarelli (12-23--25), junior Derek Crimin (12-9--21), and
senior Mike Kolenda (8-11--19) The FSU defense is led by sophomore Andy
Roach (4-15--19) and junior Dwight Parrish (1-15--16). In goal, three
players, with a combined two collegiate wins, will compete for playing
time. Lake Superior State is led up front by right wing Sean Tallaire
(23-32--55). Other top returning point getters include center Wayne
Strachan (24-23--47), and right wing Rob Valicevic (18-20--38). Senior Brad
Willner (2-13--15) and junior Keith Aldridge (10-24--34) anchor the LSSU
defensive effort. In goal, sophomores Paul Sass (7-3-0, 2.78, .872) and
Sean Kulick (4-2-0, 2.62, .895) join freshman John Grahame in competing for
playing time.
 
Last Week: Behind two goals from junior defenseman Mike Figliomeni (Thunder
Bay, Ont.) and three assists from junior defenseman Eric Jensen (Eden
Prairie, Minn.), Michigan Tech gained an 8-3 win over Laurentian University
of Sudbury, Ontario, last Friday (Oct. 14) at the MacInnes Student Ice
Arena. The Huskies led 2-0 after one period on goals by senior center
Travis Seale (Mississauga, Ont.) and senior captain and left wing Brent
Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.). Both teams scored twice in the second period,
with freshman forward Jimmy Roy (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and sophomore forward
Jeff Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) tallying for MTU. Laurentian drew to within 4-3 at the 9:14 mark of the
third period, but MTU got the game's last four goals, including one each by
junior center Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) and sophomore forward Kyle
Ferguson (Don Mills, Ont.), and a pair from Figliomeni. Sophomore
goaltender Luciano Caravaggio (Etobicoke, Ont.) made 19 saves to pick up
the win. In Saturday's (Oct. 15) Silver/Gold Intrasquad Game, the White
eased past the Black, 5-1. Freshman forward Mark Loeppky (Saskatoon, Sask.)
led the way for White with two goals and two assists. Other White goal
scorers included Seale, freshman center Andre Savage (Ottawa, Ont.), and
senior defenseman and alternate captain Jason Hanchuk (Nepean, Ont.).
Caravaggio picked up the win for White in goal with 11 saves.
 
Huskies Hints: Michigan Tech improved to 3-0 all-time against Laurentian
with its 8-3 win over the Voyageurs last Friday (Oct. 14) at the MacInnes
Student Ice Arena. MTU's eight-goal outburst is more than double its
average of 3.03 goals per game from a year ago . . . MTU will depart
Houghton at 7 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 20) enroute to Big Rapids, Mich. It will
be the first time since leaving Ferris State that MTU coach Bob Mancini has
gone up against the Bulldogs. The MTU Alumni Chapter in Big Rapids has sold
more than 250 tickets for MTU's game at Ferris State Friday (Oct. 21).
Following the game, an alumni reception will be held at the Holiday Inn in
Big Rapids. Coach Mancini will be in attendance . . . Senior right wing
Randy Stevens (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) is still nursing a shoulder injury
and will not make the trip with the team this weekend. He could be back for
MTU's Oct. 28-29 home series against the Denver Pioneers . . . Under coach
Bob Mancini, the Huskies have never lost their first regular-season game.
In his first year ('92-93), MTU gained a 4-2 home win over Colorado
College, while last season, MTU downed St. Cloud State by a 6-1 count . . .
For the first time since '90-91, MTU is opening its regular season on the
road . . . Next year, to open the season, MTU will host Ferris State and
Lake Superior State. . . . MTU returns nine of its top 10 point getters
from a year ago . . . MTU's captain this year is senior left wing Brent
Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.). Serving as alternate captains are senior
right wing Randy Stevens (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) and senior defenseman
Jason Hanchuk (Nepean, Ont.) . . .  Pierre Page , who most recently was the
general manager and head coach of the Quebec Nordiques, spent five days in
Houghton working with the MTU coaching staff last week.

throughout the season from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. on WZRK radio, 93.5 FM.  Host
Bob Olson joins coach Mancini each week to discuss Huskies hockey in-depth.
 
Huskies on Teamline: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live by those
outside the WZRK listening area on Teamline.  Fans wishing to hear a game
should dial 1-800-846-4700 and then enter MTU's Team Code of 1149.  The
cost to hear a game is billed either to your Visa or Mastercard.  A portion
of the proceeds goes to MTU athletics.
 
Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon: The next Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon
of the '94-95 season will take place Friday, Oct. 28, at 12 noon in the
Lake Superior Room of the Northern Lights Restaurant.  MTU hockey coach Bob
Mancini, Denver hockey coach George Gwozdecky, and Huskies football coach
Bernie Anderson are the featured speakers.  Cost for the buffet luncheon is
$6.75 per person, which includes tax and tip.  Blueline Club members
receive a 50-cent discount.
 
Up Next: Michigan Tech will return home on Oct. 28-29 to entertain the
University of Denver Pioneers. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. both
nights at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Saturday's contest (Oct. 29) with
the Pioneers is the annual Hall of Fame Game.
