Today's (5/3/94) sports gossip:

Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press writes that the Gophers will
return to the "M" home jerseys this year. This should please those of you who
disliked the old-time jerseys they wore at home this year to commemorate the
opening of the new arena. :-) It will certainly make it easier to read the
numbers, since they won't have stripes through them.

Sid "Scud" Hartman of the Star Tribune ("Newspaper of the Twin Cities" - yeah,
right, it's the Mpls. paper.) writes that Casey Hankinson will attend the
University of Minnesota and play both baseball and hockey. This is no surprise,
if one recalls last week's sports gossip item that Casey, whose two older
brothers, Ben and Pete, were both Gopher hockey captains, and whose father and
mother were a Gopher quarterback and cheerleader (respectively, of course), was
offered a hockey scholarship.
-----------------------------
There's also this item from about the high school all-stars from Roman
Augustoviz's article in the April 28 Star Tribune:

Virginia {, Minn. H.S.} hockey coach Keith Hendrickson recently saw a college
team he'd like to watch: Team Minnesota. "In two years, near the end of their
sophomore year, they would be a heck of a college team," Hendrickson said.

Hendrickson was one of the coaches for Team Minnesota, made up of 20 high school
seniors, which went 6-0 and outscored opponents 67-8 in the Chicago Showcase in
mid-April. "This was an exceptional year for Minnesota seniors," Hendrickson
said. "Those kids we had dominated every game we played. A couple of teams
tried to take the body on us. But our kids worked hard and skill took over
toward the last half of those games."

Bloomington Jefferson's Mike Crowley was the first player in the showcase's
10-year history named both MVP and top defenseman in the tournament. Crowley
had six goals and 11 assists to lead Team Minnesota with 17 points. Also in
double figures in points were Joe Bianchi of Bloomington Jefferson (five goals,
nine assists), Casey Hankinson of Edina (seven goals, six assists), Ryan Kraft
of Moorhead (six goals, seven assists), Clint Johnson of Duluth East (six goals,
six assists), Cory Miller of Bloomington Kennedy (seven goals, four assists) and
Mark Smith of Hill-Murray (two goals, eight assists).
