FOUR BLACK BEARS NAMED TO HOCKEY EAST ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
ORONO, Maine — Four members of the University of Maine men’s ice hockey
team were among 43 players named to the Hockey East All-Academic squad,
which was released today.
Junior forward Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and
junior forward Gray Shaneberger (Sewell, N.J.) were both named to the
team for the third time, while sophomore forward Todd Jackson
(Cortland, N.Y.) and senior goalie Matt Yeats (Innisfail, Alberta)
received their second selection to the squad.
Kariya and Shaneberger were earlier this year named the recipients of
the Dean Smith Award, as the top male student-athletes at the
University of Maine in 2001. Kariya was also named to the Verizon
Academic All-District I team last month.
To be eligible for the Hockey East All-Academic team, an individual
must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each of the two
academic periods during which his team was actively competing.
