HOCKEY RUNS AWAY FROM SALVE REGINA, 7-2
PORTSMOUTH, RI -The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team scored six goals in each of the final two periods and defeated host Salve Regina, 7-2, in a non-conference game at the Portsmouth Abbey Arena Saturday.
UMass Dartmouth took the lead for good with a three-goal the second period. Sophomore Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA/Eastern Kodiaks-EJHL) broke a 1-1 tie when he put the Corsairs ahead with a power play goal at the 49 second mark of the second period. Jacob Hutt then scored for the Seahawks at 3:51 to tie the score.
Senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) put UMass Dartmouth ahead for good, 3-2, when he scored at 5:21 of the middle period, and Ruddock made it 4-2 when he scored his second power play goal of the night for the Corsairs just 30 seconds later.
Sophomore defenseman Nate Dupere (Fall River, MA/Hebron Academy) made it 5-2, UMD, when he scored at 7:17 of the third period. Senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) scored UMass Dartmouth’s third power play goal of the game at 12:45 of the third period to make it 6-2, and sophomore forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) scored UMD’s final goal of the game at 18:15 of the third period. Ruddock (two goals, one assist) and McDonald (a goal and two assists) each had three points for the Corsairs.
The teams had exchanged goals in the first period. Chad Goodwin put Salve Regina ahead when he scored at 7:26 of the first period. The Corsairs tied it at 18:07 of the period on a goal by freshman forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MI/Rochester Ice Hawks-MNJHL), who batted his own rebound past SRU goaltender J.C. Turgeon into the net to tie the score.
“We did a very good job moving the puck on the power play, and that was the difference in the game,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “(Sophomore goaltender) goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Golden Rockets-KJHL) played well in goal. They scored first, and we tied it on a great effort by Shaun Walters, who won the race for his own rebound and tucked it behind the goaltender. It was a pretty solid effort, and I’m happy to see us get a win. We now have a big week coming up with three league games.”
The Seahawks outshot the Corsairs, 44-35. Sophomore goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Golden Rockets-KJHL) made 42 saves for UMD, while Turgeon made 28 stops for Salve Regina.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-3-1 with the victory, while Salve Regina fell to 4-11-0 with the defeat. UMD will return to action when they visit Salem State Tuesday evening.
