Even though I have watched college hockey "only" since 1966 I'll take issue
with this:

>Back in the 50s, nearly everyone playing college hockey was Canadian.
>John Mariucci was the first coach to change this trend. He filled his teams
>at Minnesota with Americans and, more specifically, Minnesotans. At that
>time, Minnesota produced a large percentage of the hockey talent in the U.S.

This may have been true in the WCHA but in the ECAC I strongly suspect that
BC, Harvard, BU, Yale, Princeton, Brown, etc. were mostly made up of native
born players. RPI, Clarkson and SLU were probably heavily Canadian but two
of them are on the Canadian border and the other was coached by Ned
Harkness. This was a hot issue when Harkness came to Cornell as other ECAC
teams were increasingly recruiting in Canada and Cornell changed to a
virtually all Canadian roster. I recall BC being all US and Harvard almost
all US players on the roster in the late 60's and the teams to beat in the
ECAC. My recollection is that BU had a fair number of Canadians but not as
many as Cornell.
