From the 1/31/92 THN.

THN's Top Hobey Hopefuls
1. Scott Beattie, C, Sr, NMU. 19-34--53 in 22 games.
2. Rob Gaudreau, D, Sr, PC. 18-24--42 in 22 games.
3. Darrin Madeley, G, Jr, Lake Superior. 1.97 GAA to lead nation.
4. Dixon Ward, LW, Sr, North Dakota. 24-22--46 in 22 games.
5. Denny Felsner, LW, Sr, Michigan. 52 pts in 21 games.

These are all solid candidates - but what about these players?
(stats prior to the week that just went by; I don't have stats for the first 3)

Mike Lappin, SLU
Mark Kaufmann, Yale
Daniel Laperriere, SLU
Mike Boback, PC (12-36--48 in 22 games)
Jim Montgomery, Maine (13-28--41 in 20 games)
Jean-Yves Roy, Maine (18-18-36 in 18 games)
Joe Flanagan, UNH (16-25--41 in 20 games)

I would rank Montgomery as the top candidate among those from HE. And
I'm sure folks who are watching the West can add some worthy candidates,
I'd prefer to leave that to them. I'll start them off with UAA's Paul Krake.
In the four times I have seen him play over the last two years, Krake has
probably been the most impressive goaltender I've seen.

Mike's Gold Stars for the Forehead go to one player from each of the Eastern
conferences. Western fans can do the same if they like, again I'd rather
leave that to folks who get to see more of those players.

ECAC: Parris Duffus, G, Cornell. The little-known (outside of Lynah) goalie
with the odd name has posted a 2.37 ECAC GAA, 2nd-best in the league,
while playing almost every minute of Cornell's 12 league games with a
7-3-2 ECAC record. A big reason why the decimated Big Red are still in the
hunt for the ECAC title. Last year's #3 goalie has stepped in to more
   than adequately do the job.
Honorable Mention to Harvard goalie Allain Roy, who has rebounded from a rough
junior year to stake the similarly-decimated Crimson to the top spot in the
ECAC. Roy leads the ECAC in goaltending, 2.27.

HE: David Franzosa, Sr C, BC. With 12-20--32 in 21 games, he's scored a lot of
big goals for the Eagles who almost exclusively rely on Franzosa's line
for offense. Franzosa does it all - penalty-killing, power play, etc. and
does it well. The Eagles entered the weekend in 4th place in HE in both
penalty-killing and power play, in large part due to Franzosa's efforts
as he has taken upon his shoulders the need to fill the loss of all the
great players from last season. BC has no right being just two points
out of first right now, and they'd be nowhere near that if not for him.
Honorable Mention to Maine Sr LW Scott Pellerin. After a superb freshman year,
he faded into the background as Roy/Montgomery/Downey/Carney/Dunham/Snow/
etc. started to get the ink, but this is probably his finest season yet.
16-17--33 in 20 games. His defense has improved tremendously and he has
become a true team leader. Scored Black Bears' first 4 goals against PC
Saturday in a game Maine needed to win to get back on track after losing
at Northeastern. He's even a viable Hobey candidate to those who have
seen him play much of this season.
