TEXT/PLAIN (120 lines)
Tonight at PC's Schneider Arena the Providence College Lady Friars blanked
the Brown Bears by a score of 2-0 to take the 3rd annual Mayor's Cup.
There was no competition in this game; IMO the score really doesn't
reflect just how badly Brown was beaten.

The first period (and, as it turned out, the entire match) was quite
boring--neither team seemed to be into this game. Both seemed to be
playing rather conservatively, and Brown did not have its team plan
together. Most of the players didn't seem to have a sense of where their
teammates were or the where puck was. PC looked better but their
motivation was somewhat lacking as well at first. At 13:18 the Friars
scored first with something of a fluke goal, as Stacey Kreger made a low
shot from the right side, and while Brown goalie Ali Brewer blocked with
her stick, it bounced off the post and into the goal. Katie Lachapelle and
Corinne Rosen were credited with the assists.

More of the same style continued in the second. Usually when Brown starts
the game weak (as seems to happen all too often) they come out roaring in
the second to make up for it. Not tonight, the team just didn't want to
play this game, they were playing hot potato with the puck instead ("uh
oh, I've got the puck--better try to get rid of it fast! SWAT!). Brown
fought off a 5-on-3 disadvantage fairly nicely, but the offense never
showed. The defense for both teams looked pretty good tonight, keeping the
puck out of the slot, but there wasn't much action other than that. PC
really took charge in this period and through the rest of this game,
skating rings around the Bears.

In the third we were all hoping for some action, but we didn't really get
any. This game was intensely dull to watch. At 3:44 PC's Kerstin Matthews
was left wide open in front of the net, with the other 9 players over on
the boards to the right. She got the feed and flipped it over Brewer's
left shoulder for the 2-0 lead. A nice play even if it was handed to them
on a silver platter. Brewer was pulled at 19:17 but it wouldn't help--PC
got the shutout and the cup.

I think Brown forgot to get on the bus, or had lead blades in their
skates, or *something*. There was no energy on this team today, and I'm
surprised the score was only 2-0. Although I think Brown's defense has
improved since I saw them last in early December, they did make several
dumb mistakes and poor judgement calls. The team was not playing together
tonight. If I had to pick a player of the game I'd say defensewoman Tamra
Jones made the best effort tonight, she tried to play with some enthusiasm
but nobody would help her out. Brewer was traditionally strong in goal,
as was PC's Heather Wilcox, even if Brown didn't really challenge her.
It's hard for me to pick a PC player of the game (since I didn't watch
them as closely) but Corinne Rosen caught my eye a few times. PC as a team
seemed pretty quick, but maybe it's just becuase Brown didn't want to
skate tonight. PC deserved to win this game.

Tomorrow the Bears host the Friars again in Meehan Auditorium for the
rematch at 7:00PM.
