Clarkson coach Mark Morris was looking to even the series against his
alma mater at three a piece, and did it in a close physical game.

Clarkson's Steve Dubinsky started the scoring at 1:16 in the first
period. After the drop of the puck, Clarkson had been buzzing around
the Colgate goal with persistant fore-checking. The pressure paid off
when Dubinsky scored when he one timed a pass from Scott Thomas past
Colgate goalie Baker. The other assist went to Patrice Robitaille.
Colgate pulled itself right back together and applied some of their own
pressure. During the Colgate power play, Clarkson goalie Jason Currie
made a big save on a point blank shot by a Colgate forward. Colgate
would tie the score at 8:23. deBlois won a draw to the left of Currie
back to Dickson who passed it across to Fogarty who blasted a shot
through Currie's legs. The game was to get a lot more physical until
the third period. There were a lot of action away from the puck.
Colgate was deny Clarkson the cross ice pass and kept Clarkson bottled
up in their own zone and at center ice. Colgate was also out hustling
Clarkson to the puck.

Ref Cerbo gave his whistle a work out in the second period as the play
got chippier. There was a lot of 4-on-3, 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 play. Most
teams blowing whatever power play chance they would have, usually by
getting a penalty called. Clarkson would go 0 for 8 on the power play.
Colgate was 0 for 5. The goal tending was very good as both goalies
stopped break-aways and close shots. At one point in the second period,
Clarkson had 3 defensemen in the penalty box. Baker had to stop Conroy,
Belanger and Marchant on individual breaks. The Clarkson forwards did
aid him by shooting into his body.

Both teams put away the scrappy play for the third period as no
penalties were called. The play was fast and furious. Clarkson came
out flying and scored the first two goals of the period. Tuomainen
worked hard bringing the puck into the zone and digging for it behind
the Colgate zone. Craig Conroy set him self up next to the goal and put
a quick wrist shot past Baker at 4:22 when Tuomainen passed the puck out
to him. Clarkson kept the pressure up. Conroy almost scored again
after the ensuing face-off on a redirect. Soon after, Clarkson had iced
the puck. Colgate won the face in the Clarkson zone, but Freshman Todd
Marchant intercepted a cross ice pass and came flying out of the zone.
He blew by Colgate defenseman MacKenzie at the blue line and put a back
handed shot past Baker, low on his stick side at 5:57. Two minutes
later, Currie would have to make 2 big saves to keep Colgate off of the
score board. MacKenzie kept the pressure on Clarkson with some hard
work, bringing the puck in and digging behind the net. Wild and
MacKenzie wrestled the puck from Theriault and Green. Wild passed it
out to Fahey who put it by Currie at 10:52. Clarkson started to apply
some more pressure to extended their lead back to two. Conroy would get
his second goal when he continued a Thomas shot from the side of the net
at 14:17. The other assist going to Belanger. Marchant wasn't to be
out done by Conroy though. As Colgate attempted to clear their zone,
Torrey intercepted the clearing pass and gave it to Marchant, 15' from
the goal. Marchant fired a shot low that bounced in off the post at
17:02, other assist to Sabo. Clarkson would need the three goal cushion
as Colgate came back and scored twice in the 19th minute. Fahey scored
first at 18:06 on a shot from the point that went through a 3 player
screen and off of Currie's glove. Assists to MacKenzie and Garzone.
With Baker pulled for the sixth skater, Band scored at 18:57 when he
redirected a shot Fogarty pass Currie, other assist to Dexter.

Clarkson played the first two periods better than the week before
against Vermont, but still produced a big third period for the win.
They'll need a solid three periods this afternoon to beat Cornell. I'm
looking forward to Bill Fenwick's complete recap and impressions.
