There have been goalie captains in the past (I believe Brian Hayward was one
his senior year at Cornell, or maybe it was Darren Eliot), but for the last
I-don't-know-how-many years, goalies have been specifically prohibited from
being captains by NC$$ rules. Actually, what the rulebook says is,
"No goalkeeper shall be entitled to exercise the privileges of captain"
(Rule 2-2b), which essentially means they can't discuss rule interpretations
with the referees, and I guess they can't wear the "C" either. That doesn't
mean a goaltender can't be an "honorary" captain; in fact, I recall a team
having a goalie as an honorary captain this year (of course, I have no idea
which team it was). But a goaltender can't be an official team captain.

I suppose part of the reason goaltenders are excluded from being full-
fledged captains is that they are also prohibited by NC$$ rules from crossing
the center-ice red line, unless they're heading to the bench -- making it
kind of difficult for them to go to the other end of the ice to find out
what's going on in a penalty situation or something.
