Working on something totally unrelated to hockey, I came across an
article that explains the objection of some tribes to their commonly used
names.  It says that the Sisseton-Wahpeton-Sioux tribe changed its name
to the Sisseton-Wahpeton-Dakota Nation because they said that they
consider the name Sioux to be derogatory.  They said it comes from the
French version of a Chippewa word.  The Chippewa tribe called their
enemies "Nadouessioux," a kind of snake.
 
The article also talks about the origins of and/or objections to Navajo,
Papagos, Apache, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Chippewa, Crow, Hopi, and Mohawk.
