If it weren't for Maine's PK effectiveness (ranked 5th in the nation), and
solid play between the pipes, Maine would be in some pretty tough soup right
now. Can we all agree that defensively, Maine is very good overall.

Where Maine is lacking is offensive power against evenly matched or better
opponents. Among HE schools, Maine is ranked 6th in PP scoring percentage
in all games (14.3%), 7th in league games (2-26 or 7.7%). Four teams listed
above Maine in HE are among the nation's top 20 in PP% (UML ranked 3rd, btw)
This is most uncharacteristic of UMaine, whose championship teams were much
more offensive-minded.

I'm starting to wonder if Coach Whitehead has instituted the hockey
equivalent of the old Princeton basketball "stall" offense from the pre-shot
clock days. Maybe that's why many of us bemoan the "pass-o" exhibition when
Maine is on offence...keep passing it around until the "perfect" shot opens
up ?

Throw out the Vermont and Niagra numbers, and the Maine "O" is quite anemic
against equal or better teams.

Is this season going to be the Denver game being replayed many nights, sort
of like the movie "Groundhog Day"?
