On several BBC broadcasts of the past weeks
there have been references to a world "Hockey
Tournament" currently going on. Since every
team mentioned has been from a tropical or
sub-tropical country, I assume that in Britain
(and probably throughout the entire
Commonwealth, minus Canada), "hockey" is that
strange, grass field, curved stick, lacrosse-like
game played in the U.S. solely by muscular
girls in plaid skirts at Eastern prep schools (I
can see feel the avalanche of letters coming...),
and the sport played with knives stuck to your
feet is strictly "ice hockey", thank you.
