NANOOKS DEFEAT NOTRE DAME, EARN SERIES SPLIT
FAIRBANKS, AK-The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ hockey team took a 2-0 lead and staved off a late rally to defeat Notre Dame, 3-2, at the Carlson Center Saturday night. The victory gave the Nanooks a split of the two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.
Sophomore center Curtis Fraser (Surrey, BC/Vernon-BCHL) gave UAF a 1-0 first period lead when he converted freshman defenseman Darcy Campbell’s (Airdrie, AB/Olds-AJHL) pass and beat Fighting Irish goaltender Morgan Cey at 7:01 of the first period. Senior right wing Jason Grinevitch (Glendon, AB/Drayton Valley-AJHL) extended UAF’s advantage when he scored an unassisted goal at 2:05 of the second period.
Evan Rankin scored at 6:23 of the third period to cut the Nanooks’ lead to 3-1. Tim Wallace and Cory McLean assisted on the play. Ryan McLeod restored UAF’s two-goal lead when he converted passes from junior right wing Kelly Czuy (Edmonton, AB/Canmore-AJHL) and freshman wing (Calgary, AB/Sherwood Park-AJHL) Aaron Lee to make it 3-1 less than a minute and a half later, at the 7:49 mark. Josh Sciba scored at 19:41 of the third period to make it 3-2, but UND could come no closer.
Cey made 22 saves for the Irish, while freshman goaltender Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK/Victoria-BCHL) made 18 saves for UAF.
The Nanooks improved to 6-4, 5-3 in CCHA action with the victory, while Notre Dame dropped to 3-6-4 and 2-5-3. UAF will return to action when they visit Ohio State next weekend.
