The following statement is why medical research, or its reporting, is so shitty:

"With the half shield, the helmet can be tilted back and come
off easier, not to leave out, an increase in facial lacerations and dental
injuries. Getting your chin knocked can cause a concussion. So leaving that
area of the face unprotected increases your risk. The convincing evidence in
the Canadian study was that full shields are safer."

It IS NOT knocks on the chin that cause consussions, it is knocks on the chin
WITHOUT a mouthguard. Without knowing if the Canadian study included use of
mouthguards, the study's applicability to the NCAA -- where mouthguards are
required -- is at best dubious.

Medical research, despite its high tech appearance, is in the dark ages of
scientific research (notice the different types (adjectives) of research)
because they hardly ever control all the variables before making a
cause-effect conclusion.
