This idea seems to come up every year.  I can't understand why it is not
obvious to some that it is the schools who are exploiting the athlete,
not the other way round.  At least for the major sports (basketball and
football) the schools realize much more money in the form of revenue the
sports (ie the players) generate both from admissions and increased
alumni contributions.  If the schools were really serious about educating
these "student athletes" there would not be such large demands made on
their time for practice, AND there would be some rule about playing games
during the week and travelling at times they should be in class.
