Headline: Bonin leads honorees at U hockey banquet

The Gophers hockey team announced the 1994-95 award winners Sunday
during the team's annual banquet at the Sheraton Minneapolis
Metrodome Hotel.

Junior center Brian Bonin received the John Mariucci Award as the
Gophers' most valuable player.

Bonin was the top scorer in the WCHA and was Minnesota's most
consistent scoring threat all season.

Defenseman Mike Crowley won the Frank Pond Trophy as the Gophers'
rookie of the year.

Crowley also won the WCHA Rookie of the Year award as a major
contributor to the Gophers' defense, the best in the league.

Crowley started most of the games on the blue line this season and
will play a huge role in Minnesota's future.

Co-captain Scott Bell took the Mike Crupi Award for the third time in
his Gophers career. The award is given to the most determined player
of the season.

Bell accepted a contract to play for the Minnesota Moose of the
International Hockey League.

Junior defenseman Greg Zwakman won the John Mayasich Trophy for the
best student-athlete.

Zwakman had a 4.0 grade-point average during fall quarter and was
named to the College of Liberal Arts Dean's List as a three-time
recipient of the University's Scholar-Athlete Award.

Co-captain Justin McHugh received the Elwin ``Doc'' Romnes award for
leadership and sportsmanship. As an inspirational leader, McHugh was
a valuable part of Minnesota's 1994-95 team.

Goaltender Jeff Callinan and defenseman Dan Trebil received the Dr.
V. George Nagobads Cup as unsung heroes.

Both Trebil and Callinan were denied WCHA honors despite being key
parts of the Gophers' defense.

------------------------------
Sorry, I just can't let this go without putting in my vote (yeah, I
know it counts for less than nothing...), but to me the Gophers'
biggest unsung hero was Greg Zwakman. Maybe the Gopher faithful feel Cally
and Trebil were slighted in the all-WCHA voting, but they're hardly
unsung around Mariucci Arena. Zwakman is a steady defenseman whom
most people don't even notice (what higher praise is there for a
defensive defenseman?) even though it's he who teams up with Dan
Trebil for the penalty kill, not Mike Crowley.
