MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE NCHA

LAST WEEK: A very limited non-league schedule was the order of the week,
with UW-River Falls topping Mankato State, Bemidji State falling to
Minnesota-Crookston, and UW-Stevens Point getting a tie with St. Mary's
before dropping a pair to Mercyhurst.

UP AHEAD: UW-River Falls is the first to hit the ice following the
Christmas Break when they play at St. Thomas on December 30. The Falcons
also open the New Year on January 2 when they host St. Mary's. St.
Scholastica is at St. John's, UW-Eau Claire is at Mankato State and
UW-Superior is at Augsburg on January 3 before the league returns to
conference play on the weekend of January 6-7 with four series.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS: On behalf of the NCHA coaches and players, thank you to
everyone for your coverage and interest in the NCHA. Here's wishing each
of you a very Merry Christmas and the best of New Year's. The next NCHA
release will be faxed/mailed on Monday, January 9.

Brian Wilson scored a pair of goals and Tom Bachmeier and Jeff Heil
combined for 24 saves as the Falcons won the non-conference matchup.
Russ Johnson gave UWRF the only goal they would need at 8:04 of the first
period before, following a scoreless second period, the Falcons exploded
for three scores in the third. Brian Savage tallied at 9:50 before
Wilson scored back-to-back at 13:48 and 19:42.

UW-Stevens Point 4 St. Mary's 4 (OT)

Kevin Plager's goal at 18:22 of the third, his second of the game, forced
the overtime as the teams skated to the tie. After St. Mary's scored the
lone first period goal, UWSP got three in the second from Pat Bogen,
Plager, and Willy Frericks and led 3-2 entering the third. SMC tied it
at 14:02 and then took the lead at 18:10 before Plager evened it up just
12 seconds after the Cardinal's lead goal. Dave Ketola had 20 saves in
net for the Pointers.

Minnesota-Crookston 3 Bemidji State 2

A goal at 14:06 of the third by UMC snapped BSU's seven-game winning
streak. The Beavers struck first on Bernie Adlys' goal at 15:02 of the
first. But the Trojans tied it with 35 seconds left in the first and
then grabbed the lead late in the second period. Jim Logan tied it at
2-all for Bemidji at 11:32 of the third but UMC got the game-winner less
than three minutes later. Mike Beaton and Robin Cook combined for 28
saves for the Beavers.

Mercyhurst 4 UW-Stevens Point 3
Mercyhurst 6 UW-Stevens Point 3

FRIDAY: The visiting Lakers exploded for four goals in the second
period, three straight on the powerplay, and held off a Pointer third
period rally for the win. Willy Frericks gave UWSP a 1-0 lead after one
before Mercyhurst ran off four goals in 13 minutes to take a 4-1 lead
entering the third. Paul Voth tallied early in the third to make it 4-2
and then Kevin Plager brought the Pointers within one at 9:04 but MC held
on down the stretch. David Fletcher and Dave Ketola combined for 23
saves in net.

SATURDAY: Mercyhurst opened with three goals in the first 13 minutes and
added three more in the second period on the way to the sweep. After the
Lakers grabbed a 3-0 lead, Willy Frericks got Point on the board to make
it 3-1 after one. It was 6-1 after two before Gord Abric and Wil Nichol
scored back-to-back powerplay goals in the third. Dave Ketola and David
Fletcher combined for 15 saves.
