Dean Blais lands first recruit
Brand Williamson, a defensemen for the Thunder Bay (Ont.) Flyers of the
United States Hockey League, is the first recruit of the year for UND
hockey coach Dean Blais.
Blais said Tuesday that Williamson had given UND a verbal commitment to
play for the Sioux next season. Williamson will not be allowed -- by
NCAA rules -- to sign an official letter of intent until next spring.
Blais said that Williamson is the best defenseman in Canadian junior
hockey. He was recruited by a number of colleges, including Denver
University and Michigan State.
Williamson is an offensive defenseman in the mold of former Sioux
defenseman Russ Parent and former Minnesota-Duluth defenseman Norm Maciver.
"That's one down, hopefully six more to go," Blais said of his recruiting.
