Last week the Belgrade Public Library hosted an informational program on
Christopher Knight (the North Pond Hermit) featuring the District Attorney
who prosecuted him (Meaghan Maloney) and the Game Warden who caught him
(Terry Hughes).  They were absolutely fabulous!

DA Maloney talked about some of the choices they had -- and didn't have --
in legal pursuit of his actions which included theft and burglary while
also considering the financial costs of jail and/or rehabilitation to the
public.  Warden Hughes spoke about finding Knight's campsite and his
wilderness skills to survive by himself for 27 years in the woods.  Both
were very respectful of Mr Knight and the property owners who were

It was our biggest crowd ever for a library program and they stayed late to
answer many MANY questions and share insight.  They also discussed their
interactions with Michael Finkel (author of Stranger in the Woods) as he
wrote about Christopher Knight.  It has been over five years since the
trial but the continued interest was astounding -- especially considering
that there were eight other big programs happening the same evening within
fifteen minutes of us!

Overall it was a fantastic evening and I would highly recommend their
program to other libraries.  They are very easy to work with and both have
a great sense of humor to keep the evening moving forward.  If you are
