As an alternative, if you set the 1-4 and 2-3 matchups, then move them
around to minimize the possibility of intraconference matchups:
1 BC v 16 AF
6 Ferris v 11 Denver
2 Mich v 13 Cornell
8 Minn v 9 BU
3 Union v 15 WMU
7 UMD v 10 Maine
4 NoDak v 14 Mich St
5 Miami v 12 Mass-Lowell
No reason to think the Committee will do that as they've said in the past
that avoiding second round matchups is not a priority, and this moves NoDak
and Mich farther from home. A chance at an all-CCHA 2nd rounder can't be
avoided with 5 teams in the tourney, but should it happen, it would at
least be in the Great Lakes watershed. (Of course, the 5 teams does
release the committee from having to shuffle the 4 seeds, if they don't
want to, but you still end up with Cornell in either GB or SP, since they
tend to keep the overall #1 with an Automatic Qualifier)
"Avoiding 2nd-round match-ups" would give them cover for making sure
there's a Hockey East team to help attendance in the Bridgeport regional.
It also lets them rely on Minn to support the St. Paul regional and try to
salvage GB attendance with traveling Whioux fans.
