With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it’s time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournaments contests. For Contest #1, in which the later
rounds were weighted more than the earlier ones, the overall winner is...
Tony Buffa
In a bit of a runaway, his 175 points bested runner-up Jim Dixon by 14.
Tony now takes the mantle of Exalted HOCKEY-L Lucky BAST –- er, I mean,
Supremely Talented Prognosticator. Congratulations, Tony!
As for the individual conference winners...
Tony Buffa took top honors in the ECAC with 46 points, on the strength of
being the only person to forecast Harvard’s title win.
A tight Hockey East race finished in a tie between Jim Dixon and David
Belfiori, with 35 points each. Both remained tied after the first
tiebreaker (final score of the championship game), but Jim took the second
tiebreaker, coming within two of the total goals scored in the entire
tournament.
Carol Belfiori, who was the only person to pick Ohio State to win the
tournament, topped the CCHA with 50 points.
The WCHA title went to Bill and Virginia Krebs, who were the only ones to
pick Minnesota to win the championship and finished with 36 points.
William Sangrey and Charlie Shub tied atop the Atlantic Hockey standings
with 36 points each. Both were still tied after the first tiebreaker, but
William won the second tiebreaker, coming within four of the total goals
scored in the tournament.
From last week’s update, Matt Carberry won the CHA race in a tiebreaker,
with 36 points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Also, my apologies to Terry Casper and Matt Sullivan, whose picks were left
off my earlier updates.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 4-2) to be 2-1,
you would get three points; if you picked 1-0, you would get five points;
and if you picked 3-2, you would get one point. Obviously, the lower point
score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For Hockey East, the championship game score was 2-1 and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 58.
For Atlantic Hockey, the championship game score was 4-0 and the total
goals scored in the tournament was 39.
For the CHA (from last week), the championship game score was 4-3.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.

LET'S GO RED!!
"For surely there is nothing more thrilling in this world than the sight of
a lone man, facing single-handedly, a half a ton of angry pot roast."
