The word on the street (and if your street is like mine, it finally has
snow - YESSSSS!!!) is:

Starting in the fall of 2002 or 2003 or maybe even 2004, there will be a
Women's HockeyEast. Boston University, Merrimack and UMass-Lowell look
close to joining Boston College, Maine, UNH, Northeastern and Providence in
the new DI league.

BU may make Walter Brown Arena the home of the Women's team, while the Men
move to BU's new rink. BU is currently a club side and has a
"high-profile" coach in line for their new Women's DI varsity team.
Merrimack has a coach in mind, and is currently finishing renovations to
their rink (2004). UMass-Amherst will probably remain a club.
UMass-Lowell is thinking about promoting its club team to varsity.

It appears HockeyEast only wants HE schools in the new HEW league. UConn,
Niagara and Quinnipiac are the other schools in the ECAC DI East league.
