Cornell hangs on, advances to SIT Final.

Shane Palahicky's short-handed goal early in the third period turned out to
be enough to lift the Cornell Big Red past the Clarkson Golden Knights with a
2-1 win in the first round of the Syracuse Invitational Saturday. Cornell
will face off against the Niagara Purple Eagles in the SIT Final on Sunday
afternoon.

Palahicky scored his goal on a 2-on-1 break after the forward accepted a pass
from goaltender Ian Burt at the Cornell blue line. Palahicky skated the
length of the ice with the puck before wristing a shot that handcuffed
Clarkson netminder Shawn Grant at 4:49.

Clarkson mounted a strong effort to tie things up, but couldn't find a way to
beat Burt again despite outshooting Cornell 12-6 in the third period.

Cornell erased a 1-0 deficit late in the second period, when Matt McRae took
a shot on goal from the right wing boards at 15:53. Grant appeared to have
control of the shot, but the puck trickled through his pads and rolled slowly
across the goal line to put Cornell on the scoreboard.

Clarkson took the initial lead of the game early in a physical first period.
On the power play, right wing Murray Kuntz took a shot from the right point
that found its way through traffic at 5:49, and surprised Burt as it found
the back of the net.
