TEXT/PLAIN (42 lines)
(26Feb99) Friday evening at Varsity Arena, the host Toronto Varsity Blues
blitzed the X-Women of St. Francis Xavier 3-1. Basically, the X-Women, the
Atlantic champions, got x'd by Toronto, who had too much firepower for the
visitors.

The game started slowly, but with some end-to-end action. UT opened the
scoring when Jacqueline Cherevaty (Urszula May) took the puck across the front
of the net and pumped her power play try home. The Blues pressed their
advantage. Stephanie Summerhill (Jen Rawson) made it 2-0 when a shot from the
point rocketed into the top of the netting.

In the second, the X-Women came back with a power play tally from Jennifer
Beaton (Gayle MacDonald, Lisa Hornby). From a face-off, Beaton collected the
puck and flicked her shot, from a wide-angle. The puck deflected off the
goalie and into the top of the goal. But, Toronto was too strong and regained
their two goal margin when Barb Tyers (Rhonda Mitchell) redirected a point
shot.

There was no scoring in the final interval. UT closed out the match.

The X-Women were not able to stay with the Blues. They had some nice moments
where they produced several telling breaks. The line of Norma Doucet, Sarah
Kelly and Marcie Murray looked good together. They fought hard for the puck
and used each other well. Winnell Jackson had a very strong match in goal.
She withstood the onslaught extremely well. Overall, a tough opening game for
the X-Women.

The trivializing of sport with loud pop music at every stoppage of play was
unfortunately in fashion at the University of Toronto.
