The UConn Hockey media guide arrived in the Tuthill mailbox today. It is,
as usual, a very complete 26 pages worth of reading. One would never guess
that UConn plays at the non-scholarship level from reading this document.
It's a first class job.
One notable addition to this year's edition is a section on the new rink to
be built on campus, on the site of the old rink, starting in March 1997.
The plans shown look really attractive and complete -- and explain the
year's delay in construction. What is being shown is certainly much more
than $2.2MM that was being talked about last year. Apparently the University
is putting in Athletic Department funds to the project as well as the grant
from the Legislature which was earmarked for mere ice surface enclosure.
One disconnect in my mind, however, is the seating capacity. It is to be
2000. That strikes me as just below that needed to play true Division 1
hockey. If so, I'm wondering what the agenda is on the University's part.
Does anyone on the list have a comment on the rink seating requirements for
membership in the ECAC D-1 and HE?
