First, the selections (made before yesterday's Beanpot consolation and
championship). Notes are mine, as only the selections appeared in the
Globe.
HOCKEY EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
John Joyce, BC. Scored winning goal in BC's quarterfinal Beanpot win
over NU last week.
Patrice Tardif, Maine. With Maine down 4-2 with three minutes left at
Lowell Sunday, scored twice including tying goal with 56 secs left as
Maine pulled out its second of two ties on the weekend.
HOCKEY EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Greg Taylor, BC. Stopped 40 of 44 shots as BC beat NU 5-4 in double
OT to open Beanpot.
Now, my questions. I agree with Tardif, however...
For PotW:
* Where is Providence's Chad Quenneville? Quenneville had a hat trick
Wednesday in PC's 6-6 tie at NU, a league game. He added another goal in
Friday's 4-2 loss to NU, another league game.
For RotW:
* Where is Merrimack's Martin Legault? Legault stopped 34 of 36 shots
Saturday as MC won for the first time ever at UNH, a league game.
* Where is Merrimack's Claudio Peca? Peca had a goal and two assists in
MC's 4-2 win, a league game.
I thought that extra weight was supposed to be given to HE conference
games when choosing the weekly honors. At least, this is what I have
been told in the past. In light of the three performances I listed
above, I think Joyce and Taylor are not good choices. Both players
only played one game during the week and it was a nonconference game;
their performances were not outstanding enough to supersede the
performances of other players in conference games.
The Beanpot is certainly big, but why is HE penalizing the players
from the HE teams that don't get to play in it? It's not their fault.
All five of the HE games this week were big ones - two battles for third
place (PC-NU), the Maine-Lowell ties, and a move by rapidly-rising
Merrimack out of the cellar - and there were performances in all of
those that warranted more serious consideration. That's my view.
