Summary:

Union had leads of 3-1 and 4-3 early in the 2nd period, but Brown scored
4 unanswered goals late in the period to take a 7-4 win at Achilles Rink
Friday. The loss dropped the Dutchmen deeper into last place, 5 points
behind Princeton and Cornell for the 10th playoff position.

Union and Brown played a pretty evenly-matched first period. Especially
early on, Union had a number of good scoring chances, but couldn't
finish off the plays. Chris Albert did score with two seconds left on a
very poor Dutchmen power play.

Union came out with 2 goals within 30 seconds in the 2nd period to take
a 3-1 lead, but Brown scored 2 goals in 29 seconds to tie the game back
up. Brad Kukko gave Union the lead again at 10:52, but that would be
all the scoring for the Dutchmen. Brown would score the next 4 goals to
give the Bears a 7-4 lead at the end of the second. Brown had 19 shots
on goal in the period.

There was no scoring during the 3rd, but there were plenty of penalties.
Things were really getting rough by the end of the game. 10 minors and
4 misconducts were handed out during the period, but they only resulted
in two power plays, one for each team. By the end of the game, Union
had 3 players in the box and Brown had four.

The loss was the 6th straight for Union. They are now 2-12 in the ECAC,
2-15 overall. The Dutchmen will play this weekend at Vermont and
Dartmouth. Union beat Vermont earlier this season at Achilles. Union's
next home games will be their last home weekend of the season, 2/26 and
2/27 against Cornell and Colgate. Union plays 6 of its last 8 games
on the road.

Friday's crowd was one of the smallest crowd of the season at
Achilles. The attendance was reported at 1,672, but I doubt there
were 1000 people there at the start of the game. The fans really got
into it when Union was playing well (and leading) early in the 2nd
period, but the crowd was pretty silent during a very boring third
period. Brown did have their pep band there, the 3rd band to visit
Achilles this season. As Keith Reynolds reported, Union is
considering banning opponents' bands, but more on that later. The
Brown band attempted to march in through the late-arriving crowd, but
that didn't seem to work. It also seemed that many of the band's
members were too old to be college students. (Does the Brown Band
also have alumni members?) And something I have never seen before:
The Brown Band played "three blind mice" when the refs were skating
around before the 2nd and 3rd periods. That's not unusual, but I've
never seen a referee come over in front of the band and start waving
his arms like he was conducting the band like Marty McDonough did! At
least these guys have a sense of humor about all the abuse they take.
